Anxiety Is Future-Talk. Grounding Is Present-Talk.
I used to love to travel.
I still do, in my head, because my back has other plans.
But for years, my wife and I went everywhere. Europe. Asia. Africa. You name it.
And every trip had the same stowaway in my carry-on.
My anxiety.
Without fail, I would slide into what I call a “what if?“ spiral.
Not just worry about the trip.
I would worry about worrying.
And then worry about worrying about worrying.
No joke.
It would start simple.
What if we get to the airport late?
Then it would stack.
What if check-in is a mess?
What if security is a mile long?
What if there’s nowhere to sit at the gate?
Then my stomach would tighten.
So I’d worry about my stomach.
What if I’m in the bathroom when boarding starts?
That thought would make my stomach worse.
So I’d worry more.
Which made it worse.
Which made me worry more.
I’m pretty sure my wife was tempted to “accidentally” leave me at Gate B-12.
And my regret is this: I probably missed a lot of culture and history because my mind was living in the future instead of the moment.
If you’re the kind of person who can think ten steps ahead, make good money, handle real responsibility, and still get flattened by anxiety in quiet moments, you know this pattern.
A sharp mind can become a torture device.
Especially when it starts rehearsing disaster.
The Simple Rule That Changed It
That’s when I learned a simple rule:
Anxiety is future-talk.
Grounding is present-talk.
That landed hard for me.
Because anxiety loves projection.
It loves previews.
It loves imaginary scenes your body reacts to as if they are already happening.
Grounding interrupts that.
It pulls your attention out of the “what if?” movie and drops it back into the only place you can actually live.
Right here. Right now.
Not fancy.
Not mystical in the vague, cloudy sense.
Practical.
Ancient in spirit. Useful in real life.
Earth-Ground
When my brain is running wild, I use what I call Earth-Ground.
It is the 5-4-3-2-1 Sensory Grounding Exercise.
To be clear, it’s not fancy.
That’s why it works.
You do it right where you are.
You let your senses give your mind a job.
You let your body remember, “I’m here. I’m not in the future. I’m here.”
That is the move.
Simple. Concrete. Effective.
And if you want to deepen this Earth connection even more, time in nature and green spaces can give the practice a nice tailwind.
Because the goal is not to “win” against anxiety.
It’s to stop giving the future so much airtime.
And start living in the present again.
Once you get that, a lot changes.
You stop arguing with every anxious thought.
You stop treating every spike like a five-alarm fire.
You stop assuming more thinking will save you from overthinking.
You start making cleaner moves.
That is where relief begins.
Inside the full newsletter, I go deeper with Earth-Ground and show you how to build it into a repeatable practice.
Not a giant routine.
Not one more self-help project.
Just real tools for hard days.
If you want to explore this kind of work with me, The Mike Guarneri Letter is where I do that.
It’s a monthly, old-school physical newsletter exploring ancient wisdom, forgotten practices, and modern science.
The ideas that elevate spirituality and help free you from anxiety are not sitting inside a sea of quick-fix ads.
They are rooted in ancient and occult wisdom, carried forward through modern practices that support personal insight and inner development.
That is what we explore each month.
Timeless wisdom.
Unconventional approaches.
Practical tools.
A way to move from the shadows into the full light of possibility.
Think of it as a guide to a new perspective.
Each issue is printed on high-quality paper and features a hole-punched design.
If you’re curious but skeptical, fair.
That’s why there is a limited-time free trial.
You just cover $9.95 for materials and processing.
You’ll also get five free gifts right away, and they’re yours to keep even if you decide not to continue.
And yes, I was once an accountant, so I do enjoy a good deal.
After the trial, it’s $48 a month.
If that feels like the kind of grounded, serious path you’ve been looking for, give it a try.
Softly. No big speech.
Just one good next step.
