How Ancient Warriors Cooled Their Anxiety
You Don’t Need Calm — You Just Need a Foothold
A couple of months ago, I had one of those mornings where everything felt slightly off-kilter.
Nothing dramatic. Just the slow accumulation of tiny frictions.
An email that landed wrong. A meeting that got moved. A task I thought would take ten minutes suddenly ballooned into forty.
By noon, I could feel that familiar pressure building behind my ribs.
Not a full spiral, but the early signs of one. The kind where your brain starts whispering, “You’re behind. You’re messing this up. You’re not going to catch up.”
My first instinct was the same instinct most anxious people have:
Make the feeling go away.
Push through it. Outrun it. Fix everything immediately so the anxiety has nothing left to cling to.
But that day, for whatever reason, I remembered something I’d written in my own notes months earlier:
“You don’t need calm. You just need a foothold.”
So instead of trying to “solve” the anxiety, I stood up from my desk and walked to the kitchen.
I put my hands on the counter (cool, solid, unmoving) and took three slow breaths.
Not heroic breaths. Not mystical breaths.
Just three human breaths.
And the wild thing is: nothing magical happened.
My anxiety didn’t evaporate. My to-do list didn’t shrink. My inbox didn’t apologize.
But something did shift.
The pressure in my chest loosened by maybe five percent.
My thoughts, which had been spinning like a wheel on ice, caught just enough traction to stop skidding.
And in that tiny bit of traction, I could suddenly see one clear next step.
Not the whole plan. Not the perfect solution.
Just the next sane thing.
I sent one email. Then I fixed one small mistake. Then I rescheduled one meeting.
And that was enough to break the spiral.
The Ancient Warrior’s Cooling Ritual
Later, when I thought about it, I realized that this was exactly what the Cú Chulainn cooling ritual teaches.
You see, in Celtic mythology, Cú Chulainn was a warrior known for his battle frenzy.
When his inner storm threatened to overwhelm him, the druids taught him a cooling ritual.
Not to eliminate the fire.
To cool it just enough that he could think again.
Three breaths to return to himself.
Here’s the technique they taught him, and the one I use now:
Breath 1: Imagine cool water being poured over your shoulders.
Breath 2: Picture the wind moving through ancient oaks.
Breath 3: Feel the ground beneath you — solid, old, steady.
That’s it.
Three breaths. Three images.
And here’s what most people miss about this technique:
The goal isn’t to make anxiety vanish. The goal is to create a foothold.
Why Most Anxiety Techniques Fail
Most anxiety management programs promise you’ll feel calm, centered, and peaceful.
And when you don’t feel that way after trying their technique, you think you failed.
But you didn’t fail.
You just had the wrong expectation.
The Cú Chulainn cooling ritual doesn’t erase anxiety.
It softens it. It creates just enough space for your thoughts to stop spiraling long enough for you to see the next step.
That foothold is where real power lives.
Because once you have a foothold, you have agency.
You can take one sane action. Then another. Then another.
And that’s how you break the spiral.
Not by eliminating anxiety.
By creating enough traction to steer again.
Why This Works (The CPA’s Perspective)
Look, I’m an analytical CPA. I deal in what works, not what sounds good.
And what works is this: anxiety is a signal, not a sentence.
When you use the three-breath cooling ritual, you’re not fighting the anxiety. You’re creating enough space to hear what it’s trying to tell you without letting it drive your decisions.
You’re listening without obeying.
And that five percent shift, that tiny bit of loosening in your chest, that moment when the wheel catches traction?
That’s your foothold.
That’s where the story changes.
That’s where you stop being swept away and start steering again.
Your Next Step
So the next time anxiety starts building, don’t try to make it disappear.
Just give yourself a foothold.
Three breaths. Three images.
Cool water over your shoulders. Wind through ancient oaks. Solid ground beneath you.
And then take the next sane step.
