Imbolc and the Anxiety of Meaning (a threshold)
I was sitting at my desk in my home office.
It was a cold, wet day outside.
The kind that makes the world feel like it is holding its breath.
My back was throbbing, and it had my full attention.
Add the soft hum of the overhead lights, and I was basically trapped inside a tiny, fluorescent cave.
Notebook open.
Pen in hand.
No good thoughts. No “inspiration.”
Just that heavy, sealed feeling.
Like the day had a stone lid on it.
And when you feel like that, your mind does what it always does.
It reaches for the oldest fear.
“What if none of this means anything?”
Then it stacks one more thought on top, like a curse written in plain English:
Nothing is happening.
That one line can turn an ordinary hard day into an inner tomb.
Sealed. Silent. Hopeless.
So I did the only thing I could do without lying to myself.
I wrote one sentence.
Not a great sentence.
Just a sentence.
Then another.
Slowly, the pages began to add up.
Not in a thrilling way.
In a quiet way.
In the way that your anxious mind loves to insult.
“This does not count.”
“This is nothing.”
And that is where the ancient part comes in.
Because every old tradition I have ever respected has one thing in common:
It trains you to see the unseen.
It teaches you that some changes happen in the dark first.
Not because you are cursed.
Because that is how life works.
Imbolc is one of those “threshold” moments on the old calendar.
Not spring yet.
But not the deepest dark anymore either.
People marked it because they needed a reminder that the world can look frozen and still be moving.
They lit candles, and they cleaned.
They blessed the home.
Not because a broom is magic.
But because a simple ritual tells your nervous system, “I am still here. I still have agency.”
And when life feels fragile, that matters.
Here is the lesson I want you to steal and use:
The most dangerous lie anxiety tells you is not “
something bad will happen.”
It is this:
Nothing is happening.
Because when you believe that, you stop participating in your own life.
You quit the walk because it “won’t fix you.”
You skip the small habit because it “doesn’t matter.”
You abandon the work because it “isn’t going anywhere.”
But the truth is, a lot of the most important progress in you is not loud.
It is not a fireworks show.
It is closer to an old candle flame.
Small and steady.
Easy to miss if you are staring into the dark and demanding proof.
Try this for the next seven days. Keep it simple.
Not to force results.
Just to keep your thread unbroken.
There is also research suggesting that nature-based and mindfulness-linked practices can support reductions in anxiety over time.¹ ² (Educational info only. If you need medical help, get it.)
And if you have been craving something deeper than “just think positive,” I get it.
Sometimes what we really want is a map.
A symbolic “scroll” we can unroll when the mind gets dramatic and starts whispering that nothing matters.
