Why Transformation Fails (and Transmutation Works)
The Ancient Alchemists Knew Something About Anxiety That Modern Self-Help Forgot
Isn’t it strange how the meanings of words can change over time?
I was recently performing genealogical research on one of my Irish family ancestor lines. The surname is Lynch.
I came across a story about how the word “lynch” came to mean what it originally meant.
Now, I understand there are a few stories about how the word “lynch” became a verb, but I will paraphrase the Irish version.
In 1493, the mayor of Galway was James Lynch.
James was a no-nonsense law-and-order man. The laws were the laws, end of story.
The story goes that James’s son committed the crime of murder. The penalty for murder was a death sentence by hanging.
However, nobody in the Galway government or law enforcement was willing to execute the mayor’s son.
In the end, James Lynch hanged his own son to death. The law was the law, and it needed to be applied equally and fairly.
From this incident, the verb “lynch” is said to have come into existence, as well as the term “lynch-mob.”
However, it meant to hang someone to death with honor and integrity.
Now, we know that in the U.S., the verb “lynch” has a completely different connotation. The lived history of this country reshaped the word’s context.
Words lose their original meanings. And when they do, we lose something important.
You see, the same thing happened to the word “alchemy.”
Most people today think alchemy means transformation.
Self-help gurus talk about “alchemizing” your pain into power. Coaches promise to help you “transform” your anxiety into confidence.
And look, transformation is useful. I use transformation techniques myself.
But here’s what most people miss: alchemy doesn’t stop at transformation. It aims for transmutation.
And the difference matters more than you think.
Transformation vs. Transmutation
Transformation means changing form.
A caterpillar transforms into a butterfly. Water transforms into ice. You transform your living room by rearranging the furniture.
The essence stays the same. Only the appearance changes.
Transmutation is different.
Transmutation means changing the fundamental nature of something at its core.
Lead doesn’t just look like gold after transmutation. It becomes gold. The atomic structure itself changes.
When ancient alchemists worked in their laboratories, they weren’t trying to make lead look prettier or shinier.
They were attempting to change its very essence.
(And yes, as an analytical CPA, I know the chemistry doesn’t actually work that way. But the metaphor? That’s where the real gold is.)
You Need Both
Now, here’s the thing most anxiety programs won’t tell you: You need both.
Transformation techniques are essential for managing anxiety day to day. Breathing exercises. Reframing. Grounding practices. These tools help you function while you’re doing the deeper work.
Because transmutation takes time.
You can’t fundamentally change the nature of your anxiety overnight. It’s a process.
And during that process, you still have to live your life, go to work, and interact with people.
That’s where transformation comes in.
But most programs stop there.
They teach you to manage anxiety, cope with it, breathe through it, and reframe it.
All useful. All necessary.
But they never get to the real alchemical work.
They never teach you how to transmute anxiety at its fundamental level.
How to change what it actually is. How to turn it into the very fuel for your spiritual growth.
Real alchemy, the kind the ancient practitioners understood, uses transformation as a tool but aims for transmutation as the goal.
The Work That Actually Changes Things
Your anxiety isn’t just something to be managed forever.
It’s something to be transmuted into spiritual power.
Not just transformed.
Transmuted.
The word matters because the process matters.
And just like “lynch” lost its original meaning through cultural shifts, “alchemy” lost its power when we started using it to mean simple transformation.
We need to reclaim it.
Because you deserve more than just coping strategies.
You deserve both the practical tools to manage anxiety today AND the deeper work that fundamentally changes it tomorrow.
You deserve transmutation.
